The town of Billund is centrally located on the Jutland peninsula in Denmark. It lies just west of the towns of Horsens and Vejle and northeast of the transport hub town of Esbjerg. From there you can easily travel anywhere in Denmark or south to Germany and onwards to the rest of Continental Europe.
Fly Icelandair to Billund. The town and its surrounding area are a great destination for the whole family – and from there you can travel by car, train or flight to a host of European cities.
Billund, the original home of Lego
No doubt the history of the small town of Billund would have been very different had the Lego bricks never been invented and no one thought of erecting the original Lego factory there. Opened in 1968, the Legoland theme park is now one of Denmark’s most popular tourist attractions, offering the whole family an unforgettable experience.
Nearly everything in Billund owes its existence to Lego – the town itself, its hotels, tourist industry and airport. Billund Airport started as a single grassy runway, built in 1964 for the sole purpose of serving cargo flights for the Lego factory. Now it’s one of Denmark’s busiest cargo facilities and one of the country’s largest airports, serving both regular and charter passenger airlines with connections to more than 15 destinations in Europe.
… but not just Legoland
Although most people fly to Billund to catch an onward flight, train or bus or to drive to some other destination, the town and its surrounding countryside, dotted with small villages, are truly charming and quintessentially Danish. In addition to Legoland, the region’s numerous attractions include the family resort Lalandia, the museum Karensminde, the Viking Centre in Jelling (a World Heritage Site), the Billund Sculpture Park and the Uhre Fuchsia Garden. Billund is also a convenient hub to explore the towns of Vejle, Horsens and Esbjerg. If golf is your game, try one of the many golf courses in and around Billund, chief amongst which are the Vejle Fjord Golfklub, Varde Golfklub and Jelling Golfklub.
Airport: Billund Airport/Billund Lufthavn (BLL) is just outside the town, not far from Legoland itself. Regular buses depart from the airport to all the main cities and towns in Denmark and there is a regular bus service between the airport and Billund town.
